Last weekend I went to an event at a tiny, though well-stocked, independent bookstore--La Playa Books: 1026 Rosecrans St., San Diego, CA 92106. Their shelves created narrow, intimate rows and spanned to a height too tall for someone shorter than me. I'm 5'9" and have arms that my mother used to say were "fit for a gorilla" since she had to add 3 inches onto the Butterick patterns she sewed for me.
Anyway, that's not a complaint about the bookstore. In this age of Ebooks and humans who too often love living in a disposable society, this shop chooses to follow a different path and sells printed books: Used, new, and antiquarian. They also support local artists, musicians, and writers with events and gallery space. What a wonderful environment awaits visitors who are welcomed into this space.
While talking with the owners, I was reassured when they said that business is growing and that their outreach to people, schools, and other organizations in the community is a huge part of their process. I look forward to other events and to visiting La Playa Books often to hunt for the next book to read.
